A crown is a custom-made porcelain protective layer that goes over the natural tooth. A crown is recommended if you have a weakened tooth from either decay, large fracture or if the tooth has had Root canal treatment, it helps to make the tooth stronger and prevent it from breaking further. Crowns are also used cosmetically to make the appearance of a tooth more aesthetically pleasing. For example, if you have a gap in between two teeth or if one tooth is discoloured or positioned not to your liking then a crown may be an option for you.
What Happens During The Procedure?
Firstly, we give local anaesthetic to the patient so they are comfortable during the procedure. The tooth/teeth are prepped and a mould is taken so we are able to make sure the crown is a custom fit. A colour is chosen and matched as closely as possible to your natural teeth.
Once the anaesthetic has taken affect the dentist will start to prep all sides of the tooth to make it slightly smaller on each side so the crown can fit perfectly onto the tooth. Once the preparation and moulds are taken a temporary crown is placed onto the tooth.
All impressions and moulds are sent to the lab.
Once the crown has arrived we try it on and show to the patient. If patient and dentist is happy with the results the crown is then glued with permanent cement.
How Long Does A Dental Crown Last?
Depending on how well they are taken care of usually a dental crown can last up to 10-30 years or even a lifetime, this will depend on good home maintenance and regular dental check-ups (6 monthly).
How Much Will It Cost?
There are a few options when choosing a material, cost will depend on the type of material you prefer.
